‘Re-wilding’ a Santa Monica beach to protect against sea level rise – KPCC

Article Synopsis – A pilot project, developed by a partnership of The Bay Foundation and Santa Monica, is looking at “re-wilding” parts of Santa Monica’s beaches in hopes it will help protect the city from sea level rise. By planting native California dune plant species along the shoreline, the hope is that sand will collect behind the plants and form dunes. In about a decade, the dunes should be three or four feet high. If the project works, it could offer a low-cost, more aesthetically-pleasing alternative to sea walls or jetties along the coast in some areas. To read the actual article click here.
