Article Synopsis – Scientists studying caverns, or moulins, in Greenland’s ice sheet have found they are larger than previously thought and may contribute to faster melting of the ice sheet. Meltwater runs underneath the ice sheet, through the moulins and out to sea. If the moulins hold large volumes of water, this can exert pressure on the surrounding ice and cause it to slide faster to the sea, resulting in more melting. “The ice sheet has lost about 4 trillion tons of mass just since 1992, and scientists estimate surface melting makes up about half of those losses.” To read the actual article click here
