Mr. Englander,
Thanks for your amazing triple chart! Would you please clarify the vertical scale for the CO2 concentration? Is it nonlinear on purpose or is there a typo? I ask b/c the first tick mark starts at 200 ppm with 50 ppm intervals to 250 ppm and 300 ppm, but then jumps 100 ppm to 400 pm.

David — Good catch. You are the first to point that out. It was not really nonlinear on purpose, but it is not actually a typo either. To explain, For the last last 400,000 years, CO2 has moved between about 180 – 280 PPM with the ice ages, so the 200, 250, and 300 ticks are correct. But now the level is 410, and as we pieced this together we erred apparently.
I either need to say its nonlinear, or expand the graph upwards to keep the vertical in linear scale. My inclination is to make a note that the vertical is not to scale. Comments?

This chart is extremely helpful. Thank you for making it publicly available. As you debate how to deal with the not-to-scale CO2 axis, I have two thoughts: First, it would perhaps increase the impact to make the axis to scale as it would emphasize the increase in CO2 that has happened in the last 100 years. It would also be helpful to have an updated graphic with CO2 at 407 (or 410 – or whatever concentration you deem best represents current concentrations).

Perhaps add superposed CO2, T on one graph, with CO2 plotted on log scale, per
hansen 2018 Climate change in a nutshell the gathering storm ;
his reasoning being that T is expected to vary as log of CO2 level.

Very effective plotting. Can you include citation of sources for the data you use in these graphs? That’s necessary for some uses. Thanks

Good suggestions. I do like the log scale Hansen used and will try to do that. As for the sources, you may notice on the far right margin that graph notes it is based on Hansen and Sato — they created it at my request for my book six years ago in a different format. You are the first to ask the actual attribution of their sources, but it’s a good idea. Thanks.
