Rivers of Air in the Sky are Melting Huge Patches of Antarctic Sea Ice – New Scientist

Article Synopsis – According to a new study, rivers of warm air in the atmosphere “play a major role in the creation of polynyas”, which are large openings in Antarctic sea ice. Some of these openings “expand tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of square kilometers”. The rivers of warm air can increase air temperatures by as much as 10 degrees C and can also intensify storms, which both work to melt the sea ice. To read the actual article click here
