Ending Greenhouse Gas Emissions May Not Stop Global Warming: Study – Phys Org

Article Synopsis – “Even if humanity stopped emitting greenhouse gases tomorrow, Earth will warm for centuries to come and oceans will rise by meters”, according to a new study. In one model, the researchers found that if carbon emissions instantly stopped now, the planet would still warm 2.3 degrees C, which is higher than the 2 degrees C goal set by the Paris Climate Agreement. The main finding of the study is that “many of the natural drivers of global warming—more heat-trapping clouds, thawing permafrost, and shrinking sea ice”—have already reached tipping points.
