8 Years Ago – High Tide on Main Street and “Sandy”

The last week of October in 2012 seems like SUCH a long time ago. But, it was the week of “Sandy” and the apocalyptic damage as superstorm hit New York City will be forever etched in our memories. The hyper hurricane dominated television worldwide the morning of October 29th. I was one of the hundred million turning on the TV as soon as I woke up to see if the storm followed the forecast. Witnessing cars in Manhattan floating out of tunnels and subway lines submerged, the devastation exceeded expectations and was worthy of a Hollywood disaster movie.

At first it did not even register that I described just such a scene in my brand new book HIGH TIDE ON MAIN STREET: Rising Sea Level and the Coming Coastal Crisis. It was published seven days earlier. Once I verified that my scenario for Atlantic City and New York, made it through the editing and was on page 121 of the published version, I mentioned the eerie coincidence to a few colleagues. The word got  around. The next day I was asked for an interview by the popular British morning show, SkyNews.

That began a series of opportunities to tie the flooding from storms and extreme tides, with the new phenomenon of rising sea level. Eight years laters, I can look back and see that week as a turning point in my life. I have now given hundreds of high level briefings, public presentations, and workshops.

In doing presentations to groups such as military leaders and intelligence agencies, financial institutions, law firms, engineers, and architects, I came to see the need for another book that focuses on our options and the positive view of adaptation. Moving to Higher Ground: Rising Sea Level and The Path Forward is now in the hands of the publisher and will be released in early April 2021. In preparation for that, I have a new Facebook Author page. To commemorate the 8th anniversary of my first book, High Tide On Main Street – and Superstorm Sandy – the publisher is offering a one week special to download the ebook from Amazon for just 99 cents (U.S.).  Please “LIKE” the new Author page, where you can get the link to download the special price e-book download of that first book – still the most popular book to explain the reality of rising sea level in plain language –  facebook.com/johnenglanderSeaLevelRise

I can’t help but note that there is another late October storm brewing in the Caribbean as I write this. Tropical storm Zeta is the 27th named storm this hurricane season. By that fact alone, it sets a new record.  Zeta is predicted to be a hurricane by Monday, when it makes landfall. Let’s hope the damage to people and property is minimal.
