Unprecedented Antarctic expedition maps sea ice to solve climate change mystery – Phys Org

Article Synopsis – A team of researchers recently returned from an expedition to Antarctica where they deployed an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to study the sea ice from underneath. The expedition was the first ever to deploy an underwater robot into the Antarctic Ocean during winter. The researchers sought to figure out why sea ice appears to be expanding in Antarctica when it is shrinking everywhere else. The findings are showing that in many areas, sea ice is thicker than previously thought. There is also quite a bit of regional variability – some sea ice in the Antarctic is expanding, in other regions, it is shrinking. Next the team hopes to explore why there is such regional variability. To read the actual article click here.
