Article Synopsis – New research shows that the Thwaites and Pine Island glaciers in Antarctica are cracking and weakening at the shear margins, which will accelerate sea level rise. Glaciers normally encounter friction at the shear margins, which slow the glaciers down. As the margins break off, the glacier speeds up.
