The Southern Ocean may be Less of a Carbon Sink than we Thought – Science News
Article Synopsis – The Southern Ocean, previously believed to be a major carbon sink, now appears to be releasing more CO2 than it takes in. Scientists have estimated that each year, “the Southern Ocean slurps up more than 40 percent of the carbon dioxide that people release”. Now, researchers have reported that “rather than sucking up CO2, parts of the ocean near Antarctica are actually burping the gas back into the atmosphere during the dark and cold of winter”. This leaves scientists to answer the question of where the carbon dioxide is going. To read the actual article click here.
