South Florida continues prep for sea level rise – Sun Sentinel

south florida floodingArticle Synopsis – South Florida is taking more steps to protect against climate change and the rising seas. Climate change is expected to lead to increased flooding along the coast and inland, intrusion of salt water into the underground freshwater supply, decrease in property values and an increase in insurance costs. In 2009, Broward, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties formed the Southeast Florida Regional Compact Climate Action Plan to study and adapt to climate change. Most of the work so far has been policy-based, such as raising the elevation requirements for new buildings and setting emission reduction plans, but some concrete actions have also been taken. These include public hybrid transportation, living shorelines, and a waste-to-energy power plant. To read the actual article click here.
