Sea-Level Rise Information Sources

Information about sea-level rise can be confusing and changes with new research. The following list of websites and publications may be useful. This list will be updated.

Note that the projections for the precise rate of sea level rise are somewhat scattered and may even appear contradictory. The reason is that no one can say how warm the Earth will get over the coming decades and century, due to unknowns about how we will produce energy and how much will be needed. Energy production from the use of fossil fuels adds to carbon dioxide level causes the planet to warm over long periods of time.  The warmer the planet, the faster the ice sheets and glaciers will melt, causing sea level to rise. In addition to the uncertain heat level in the coming decades, it is not possible to forecast precisely how the glaciers and ice sheets on Antarctica and Greenland will melt, as they are several miles (km) thick. Similar to the challenge of predicting avalanches, mudslides, and earthquakes long term precision is not possible. Most of the scientific projections focus on the minimum projected sea level rise, some look at the mid-range or median, while others try to describe the higher range projections, for greater safety, and to be more conservative.
