Sea level fears as Greenland darkens – BBC

Article Synopsis – Scientists are growing concerned that increased algae growth on the Greenland ice sheet could accelerate the melting and raise sea levels more quickly than expected. The warmer conditions are encouraging algae to grow and darken the surface of the ice sheet. Dark ice absorbs more solar radiation than white ice, which causes it to warm up and melt more rapidly. A five-year UK research project known as Black and Bloom is under way to investigate the different species of algae and how they might spread. The project, aims to publish its new projections for sea level rise in two years’ time. To read the actual article click here.
