Scripps says climate change may represent “existential” threat to humanity – The San Diego Union-Tribune

Article Synopsis – Scripps Institute of Oceanography has published a paper stating that there is a 5 percent chance that the effects of climate change will be so catastrophic in the next three decades that most people will have trouble adapting. The chance that climate change will pose an existential threat – meaning humans will not be able to adapt to it – in the next three decades is even smaller, but “that chance rises to 20 to 30 percent by 2070” according to the study’s lead author, Veerabhadran Ramanathan, a renowned climate scientist who helped influence Pope Francis to urge the world to fight global warming in 2015.
