San Diego Calculated How Fast the Sea Will Rise, But Not the Cost – Voice of San Diego
Article Synopsis – The city of San Diego conducted a sea level rise vulnerability study and found that large sections of the city could be underwater by the end of the century, and some areas much sooner. In the study’s worst-case scenario, “the Pacific Ocean could swallow up to 90 percent of San Diego’s beaches, 60 percent of its hotels, motels and restaurants, and a huge chunk of its water infrastructure” by 2100. “Whole portions of the city could crumble away in just decades, especially during storms when tidelines surge well past existing sea walls and other coastal infrastructure.” The report makes no mention of how much the damage will cost or who will pay for it.
