Thanks John. I had not yet seen that article in NATURE -- published today. It is the full peer reviewed version of the paper that the ATLANTIC article was based upon. As I wrote in this blog post, I welcome exposing the enormity of the problem of rising sea level and am fine with looking at all options. My take on this scheme remains that it needs to be "taken with a grain of salt" and certainly not seen as cause to have any belief whatsoever that we can "dodge the bullet" of rising sea level. This is a hail Mary pass to the moon in my opinion.

Excellent analysis of a badly flawed scheme and misplaced priorities.

Unfortunately, the idea just won't go away:

Geoengineer polar glaciers to slow sea-level rise

I agree. There needs to be a world-wide carbon cap and trade. And they need to work in the true value of rainforests and forestland and such so that countries like Brazil don't get punished for not burning down the Amazon to make room for agriculture. This would also encourage more companies like Global Thermostat to enter the market to start cleaning the air.

Great Antarctica / USA / Greenland graphic. I'll try to get it into a climate museum, if we ever get one built.

For 500 billion dollars, you could probably remove and sequester half a part per million of carbon dioxide from the earth's atmosphere. This is on par with the cost of the Iraq war and the bank bail outs. But hey, my highway nearby was flooded and closed for two weeks last year and I want that fixed, and I think my congressmen will out-vote the representatives from Antarctica (who don't exist).

Let's let the market place go to work for us by putting a rising price on carbon emissions paid by the fossil fuel companies, with all money returned in equal amounts to every household (carbon fee and dividend). That will accelerate the new energy economy, and help with the wealth inequality that is driving our improper politics.

I'm with you on this one. (Big surprise) Eventually, we're going to have to figure out how to cool the planet. Actively cool it. Not just stop the warming. It's going to be a rough transition, but we're at our best as a species when the sh*t hits the fan.

Thank-you for this well-thought out & articulated insight, John. We certainly need to ensure we don't jump at a "click-bait" sort of title and take it as axiom. You are so right that we must adapt, and adapt now.
