Nighttime Pictures Reveal Antarctica’s Cracking Ice Shelves – National Geographic
Article Synopsis – NASA scientists have deployed a Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) on their Landsat 8 satellite that allows them to monitor Antarctica’s ice shelves even in the complete darkness of winter. For years scientists have been monitoring Antarctica’s ice shelves during the continent’s 6 month sunny season, but were unable to do so during the 6 months of winter when Antarctica is without sunlight.
