Nighttime Pictures Reveal Antarctica’s Cracking Ice Shelves – National Geographic

Article Synopsis – NASA scientists have deployed a Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) on their Landsat 8 satellite that allows them to monitor Antarctica’s ice shelves even in the complete darkness of winter. For years scientists have been monitoring Antarctica’s ice shelves during the continent’s 6 month sunny season, but were unable to do so during the 6 months of winter when Antarctica is without sunlight. TIRS is able to capture pictures by measuring the differences in temperature between the water and the ice. To read the actual article click here.
