New Buildings Rise in Flood Zones – The New York Times

Article Synopsis – Rather than retreating from flood-prone neighborhoods after Hurricane Sandy, many developers are taking advantage of the housing shortage and demand for waterfront homes in New York’s coastal districts by increasing building in the highest risk flood zones. In fact, “one in eight new residential projects in New York is being built along the riskiest waterfront”. While many of the new developments are more resilient to flooding, there is concern over how the rest of the neighborhoods will be impacted, and especially how the higher flood insurance will affect longtime residents who can’t afford the monthly costs. To read the actual article click here
