Miami’s Fight Against Rising Seas – BBC

Article Synopsis – Sea levels are rising around the world, and in the US, south Florida is ground zero – as much for the adaptation strategies it is attempting as for the risk that it bears. One recent report estimated that Miami has the most to lose in terms of financial assets of any coastal city in the world. Florida also has more residents at risk from climate change than any other US state. In an attempt to mitigate these risks, cities in south Florida are raising streets and buildings, installing floodgates and tidal valves, building seawalls, installing pumps, and attempting to protect valuable infrastructure like waste water treatment plants and airports. Ultimately, though, many areas will eventually need to be abandoned.

My Comment – This is an excellent article that does a good job of outlining the challenges and complexities of preparing for sea level rise. To read the actual article click here.
