The melting ice makes the sea around Greenland less saline – Phys Org

Article Synopsis – Researchers measuring the waters surrounding Greenland have found that the melting ice sheet is causing a decrease in salinity that could affect the marine food chain as well as the climate in Europe. Salinity measurements taken in the Young Sea showed an increase from approximately 1 meter of pure freshwater in the water column in 2003 to almost 4 meters in 2015. This increase in freshwater reduces plankton production, which forms the basis for the marine food chain. The influx of freshwater can also alter the ocean currents that help keep Europe warm. To read the actual article click here.
