Melting Arctic Permafrost Could Release Tons of Toxic Mercury – National Geographic

Article Synopsis – Scientists have discovered massive natural reserves of toxic mercury in the Arctic permafrost which could be released as the ground thaws and possibly make its way into the food chain and eventually impact human health. The study found that the amount of natural mercury bound up in Arctic permafrost may be 10 times greater than all the mercury humans have pumped into the atmosphere over the last 30 years; its the biggest pool of mercury on the planet.
