Article Synopsis – An electricity shortage in Iraq, caused by corruption and a failing energy grid, combined with record heat from climate change is putting the poor at risk. “Nearly 2.8 billion people live in countries where the average daily temperature is greater than 25C (77F), according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), and less than 10 per cent of them own an air conditioner. The agency estimates that by 2050, 1.9 billion people living in hot countries will be without access to an air conditioner.” This puts some of the most vulnerable at risk of dying from excessive heat.
