Hurricane Harvey shows how we underestimate flooding risks in coastal cities, scientists say – The Washington Post

Article Synopsis – When a hurricane hits, the compounding effects of terrestrial flooding, caused by rain and river overflow, and ocean flooding, or storm surge, can combine to produce catastrophic coastal flooding. Typically, scientists tend to focus on one flood driver or another when conducting flood hazard assessments for any given area, but this can run the risk of underestimating the likelihood of a major flood. A group of scientists has developed a model that can take into account the effects of both flood drivers, which should help us to understand the way these factors work together. To read the actual article click here.
