“This is going to happen.” Author, oceanographer discusses sea level rise at Virginia Aquarium – The Virginian-Pilot

John at Virginia aquariumArticle Synopsis – John Englander, author of the 2012 book “High Tide on Main Street: Rising Sea Level and the Coming Coastal Crisis,” spoke on sea level rise and its impact on coastal communities Sunday at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center. Hampton Roads is second only to New Orleans as being the most vulnerable in the country to sea level rise. Just 1 to 2 feet of sea level rise is devastating to coastal communities and all the signs point to that happening within decades. Englander noted, “This is going to happen, but the problem is that it’s slow and our brains don’t seem to program well for slow emergencies.” This slow process has its silver lining as it gives communities time to adapt- if we start acting now.

My Comment – It was a great audience Sunday in Virginia Beach, at the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center. Nearly a full house in their giant theater. On Tuesday they asked me to do the same presentation for the staff and volunteers, which was also a great opportunity to explain the facts and dispel the myths. I could not believe how the facility has expanded since I lived there twenty years ago. They now have 650,000 visitors a year. Highly recommended if you are in the area. To read the actual article click here.
