Gloucester focuses on planning, not causes, to address sea level rise – Daily Press
Article Synopsis – Officials in Gloucester County, VA are taking a proactive approach to the threats of rising sea level. Their current city planning takes into account a two-and-a-half foot rise in sea level over the next 30 to 60 years, and also have scenarios for both slow and rapid rise. They will continue to pay attention to the effects of storm events on infrastructure, schools and fire department buildings over the next decade or so and planning accordingly. The area has already seen a decrease in demand for shoreline properties and expect the trend to continue. The Virginia Institute of Marine Science located in Gloucester Point has already taken several steps to adapt to sea level rise and more aggressive action is planned.
