Cryoconite: The Kryptonite of Arctic Melt – Medium

Credit: James Balog.

Article Synopsis – Researchers are finding that cryoconite, a black soot that collects on the ice in the Arctic, may play an integral role in the albedo effect. The cryoconite forms black holes in the ice that collect solar radiation. “When solar radiation increases or becomes more severe, the cryoconite holes will increase in size and therefore attract even more radiation, which in turn, melts more ice and creates a positive feedback loop.” The cryoconite blows to the ice from “nearby mountains, factories, and other polluters”.
