Climate change is already forcing U.S. communities to abandon their homes – Think Progress
Article Synopsis – According to new analysis from the Center for Progressive Reform, at least 17 communities across the United States are currently being forced to relocate due to climate change. In many of these communities stronger storm surge and rising sea levels, coupled with industry activities like cutting channels through low-lying land, have caused the land to erode at a dangerous rate. Climate models suggest that between 50 million and 200 million people will likely be displaced due to climate change by 2050. According to the authors of the report, the federal government needs to provide adequately funded and procedurally appropriate opportunities to acquire and manage land for relocation for displaced communities.
My Comment – While it would be nice to think that the government will be able to bail out communities and individuals displaced by climate change, the simple fact is that the problem will be so widespread, and affect so many people, that it is not a realistic expectation. This is why it is so important to start acting and planning now. To read the actual article click here.
