Cholera, Other Illnesses May Spread with Climate Change – Live Science

bacteriaArticle Synopsis – Infectious-disease specialists are concerned that climate change is contributing to the spread of certain diseases. Pathogens are spreading to new ecological niches, and the pathogens that live in water are the most concerning to researchers. In many cases, as waters warm, pathogens will be able to expand into new areas. The researchers are paying close attention to vibriobacteria which cause cholera and other diarrheal diseases, as well as harmful algal blooms which can lead to ciguatera and shellfish poisoning. Since pathogens are always evolving, microorganisms may be able to change over time and increasingly take advantage of conditions that may not have been present before. To read the actual article click here.
