As Sea Levels Rise, Will Drinking Water Supplies Be at Risk? – Yale Environment 360
Article Synopsis – As rivers decrease due to droughts and sea levels continue to increase, inundating groundwater supplies, many regions will experience a shortage of drinking water. Another threat to the drinking supply is saltwater intrusion from estuaries. As tidal waters push upstream with the tides, they are “opposed by a river’s downstream flow”. However, when droughts decrease a river’s flow, the saltwater can move farther down the river and closer to the drinking water intakes, potentially contaminating them.
