Antarctic Glaciers Lost Stunning Amount of Ground in Recent Years – Scientific American

Article Synopsis – New research has found that each year about 80 more square miles of ice in Antarctica is detaching from bedrock, and in West Antarctica, 22 percent of glaciers are retreating even faster. As a whole, far more glaciers in Antarctica are losing ground than gaining ice. In seven years, the continent lost about 560 square miles total of grounded ice. The entire Antarctic ice sheet contains enough ice to raise the ocean by about 200 feet, so understanding the factors that contribute to ice loss, as well as the rate of melting is vitally important to our sea level rise projections. To read the actual article click here
