My Comment – Walter’s passing is very sad news in the oceanographic community. He was still alert with an inquiring mind a year ago, when we last visited. I was honored that visitors to his home told me that he kept my book in view. Walter was brilliant and gracious. The first time I was introduced and gave him a copy of HIGH TIDE ON MAIN STREET, he immediately started asking me about my work, wanting to learn things. I felt obliged to tell him I did not have a PhD. He waved his hand and dismissed that saying “real scientists are not determined by doctoral degrees” – offering a few famous examples, including Jacques Cousteau. I treasure the memories of my discussions with him. Smooth sailing Walter….
