Rising Ground Under West Antarctica Could Prevent Ice Sheet Collapse – Axios

Article Synopsis – A new study finds that the ground underneath the West Antarctic Ice Sheet region is rising at a rate of more than 4 cm per year, which could help keep ice floes in place and slow the melting that contributes to sea level rise. If this trend continues, “the grounding line, which is the spot where the marine-based ice shelf of the Pine Island Glacier meets bedrock, will have risen by 8 meters, or 26.2 feet, in 100 years”. With continued high greenhouse gas emission rates, the rising of the ice sheet won’t be enough to stop it from melting, but under low or moderate emissions scenarios it might be. To read the actual article click here
