Article Synopsis – Scientists believe the exceptionally long winter this year is due to a weakened jet stream, which normally holds back icy Arctic air. “The jet stream is powered by the temperature difference between the Arctic and mid-latitudes. The warming Arctic weakens the jet stream”. According to climatologist Jennifer Francis, “When the jet weakens, it tends to take these bigger north and south swings.
