Puerto Rico’s Grid Needs a Complete Overhaul – CityLab

Article Synopsis – After being hit by Hurricane Maria, one of the strongest and most powerful storms ever recorded in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico is still in a state of acute emergency. The utilities are out and a majority of the infrastructure has been lost; residents are trapped in high-rise buildings; hospitals cannot safely store medicines that need to be kept cold; and 70,000 residents in the northwest of the island have been ordered to evacuate because the Guajataca Dam is on the verge of collapse. In order to rebuild, Puerto Rico will require a massive infusion of money. With infrastructure that was already vulnerable, Puerto Rico needs to completely redesign it’s power grid and make new investments in wind, solar, and other clean energy. To read the actual article click here.
