There’s a huge, overlooked economic threat to New York City, according to the official in charge of keeping the city from flooding – Business Insider
Article Synopsis – Sea level rise poses a huge risk to New York City’s infrastructure, economy, and the livelihoods of New Yorkers. In the New York metropolitan area alone, there are 48 major transit facilities at 10 feet or less above sea level. All of the city’s four airports also are at risk of flooding. A future storm could singlehandedly cost the East Coast region between $1.13 billion and $283 billion. In response to the risks, New York City is working on implementing a climate resiliency plan, which was unveiled in 2013. The plan includes strategies like building a $335 million floodwall in lower Manhattan, revising building codes, and installing bioswales that channel excess water to contained green areas.
