Scientists are using narwhals to understand sea-level rise – The Washington Post

Article Synopsis – NASA’s Oceans Melting Greenland (OMG) project is using Narwhals (whales with large, nine-foot long tusks protruding from their heads) to help measure glaciers around Greenland. The whales feed on plankton and krill, which get churned up as the ice melts. Narwhals can dive up to depths of 1,800 meters (about 5,900 feet), and tend to feed at the bottom of melting glaciers, making them an ideal species to survey the glaciers. The five-year, $10 million OMG study aims to determine how quickly Greenland’s ice will disappear. To read the actual article click here.
