Scientists discover 91 volcanoes below Antarctic ice sheet – The Guardian

Article Synopsis – Scientists have discovered 91 volcanoes below the surface of the vast ice sheet that covers west Antarctica, making it the largest volcanic region on Earth. If the ice sheets sitting on top of the volcanoes are reduced significantly, this could release pressure on the volcanoes that lie below and lead to eruptions that could further melt and destabilize the ice sheets. Meltwater outflows into the Antarctic ocean could trigger sea level rises. The scientists are now working to determine how active the volcanoes are. To read the actual article click here.
