Scientists propose refreezing Arctic in battle against climate change – CBC News

arctic glacierArticle Synopsis – In an effort to combat climate change, a group of researchers has proposed using wind-powered pumps to refreeze the Arctic. This would involve 10 million devices deployed over 10 per cent of the Arctic, at a cost of $500 billion. So far in 2017, the preliminary data suggests that the arctic is on schedule to set a record low for sea ice extent for the third year in a row. Temperatures in November and December were almost 20 degrees C above normal.  Without ice to reflect sunlight into space, heat continues to be absorbed in the region. This, in turn, causes further warming and accelerates global climate change. While most experts agree that reducing carbon emissions needs to be the main focus of climate change mitigation, more unorthodox approaches such as these also need to part of the discussion. To read the actual article click here.
