“Don’t Panic, But the Shoreline Is Moving Inland”
Yesterday the Disinformation site published a new article of mine "Don't Panic, But the Shoreline is Moving Inland." It is getting significant attention, my first piece post – "Sandy".
It both summarizes some key points from my book High Tide On Main Street and makes the distinction between storm surge and rising sea level, that are largely overlooked in the discussion following the tragedy on the East Coast. Worth sharing.
If we don't take Sandy as an opportunity to rethink our coastal policies, there will be more and more Sandy-like events in the coming decades as sea level rises. As Ben Strauss from Climate Central puts it, "You can think of raising sea level as being similar to raising the floor of a basketball court. It's easy to see that the point scores will change dramatically."
