“High Tide on Main Street” book now on Amazon.com

"High Tide On Main Street: Rising Sea Level and the Coming Coastal Crisis", my new book, is now available for purchase on Amazon.com. After nearly three years of research, writing, editing, and last minute updates to incorporate recent research, it is very exciting to have this published. It is receiving excellent reviews, excerpted below. To quote from the back cover:

Sea level will rise for at least 1,000 years

Shorelines will shift significantly by 2050

Property values may start to decline this decade

Rising sea level is the most profound long-term aspect of climate change. Yet, the public is almost completely unaware of the magnitude of the problem. For three million years sea level regularly moved up and down almost 400 feet with the ice age cycles. Now, after 6,000 years of minimal change, we are entering a new era of rapid sea level rise. In clear, easy-to-understand language, this book explains:
  • The science behind sea level rise, plus the myths and partial truths used to confuse the issue.

  • The surprising forces that will cause sea level to rise for 1,000 years, as well as the possibility of catastrophic rise this century.

  • Why the devastating economic effects will not be limited to the coasts.

  • Why coastal property values will go “underwater” long before the land does, perhaps as early as this decade.

  • Five points of “intelligent adaptation” that can help individuals, businesses, and communities protect investments now and in the future.

High marks for High Tide on Main Street!  This riveting analysis shows the many ways that everyone, everywhere is affected by sea level rise now – and forevermore. A must-read, no matter where on the planet you live.

Dr. Sylvia Earle, Former NOAA Chief Scientist, Author, Marine Biologist

A careful, clear and absolutely devastating portrait of our folly!

Bill Mckibben, Founder of 350.org, author Eaarth

Read this book… the clearest statement to date about the frightful reality of accelerating sea level rise and the catastrophic impacts…a crisis beyond anything civilization has encountered.

Dr. Harold R. Wanless, Chairman – Dept of Geological Sciences, University of Miami, Florida

This is a brilliantly written book on the challenges the world faces as sea level is changing at rates unknown to modern humankind. This book is very well documented, has easily to understood graphs, and is written in a style that is very readable and persuasive. It will be a pleasure to recommend this book to colleagues in the science community, and to others who have heard the sea level rise may be significant challenge, but have not had a serious source to better inform their perspectives on the issue.
