Article Synopsis – Researchers studying past sea level rise events found that the effects of rising seas will be far-reaching and more complex and unpredictable than we assume. In studying the Isles of Scilly, a group of 140 islands in the UK that were a single island less than 1,000 years ago, they discovered “the changes in land area and the shifts in human cultures associated with them took place at variable rates, and were often ‘out of step’ with the average rate of sea-level rise”.
