Article Synopsis – A new study has found that large-scale dam installations have limited sea level rise by about 12% since the 1970s, resolving a nagging mystery. This work helps explain a gap scientists had seen between “how much water they knew had gone into the oceans compared to how much those oceans had actually risen by over the past century”. This does not change the outlook for sea level rise in the future, as sea level is accelerating and the affect of the dams has been diminishing since the 1990s.
