Announcing: August 2020 Greenland Fact-Finding Trip

We can now announce the dates for our next Greenland Fact-Finding Trip: August 11-17, 2020. I have been going to the Arctic  since 1985. Every time, I am mesmerized by the stillness, the vastness of the ice, and in recent years, by the changes.

There is no way that words, photos, or even videos can convey the expanse of the Greenland ice sheet and the glaciers. This trip in August will showcase them at peak melting, with calving icebergs and rivers of meltwater.

Some of the program highlights are:

  • Fly far out onto the vast ice sheet by chartered helicopter to see the “rivers” of meltwater.
  • Walk on a million-year old glacier, now disappearing in full view.
  • Photograph enormous icebergs from water-level by boat.
  • Get behind the headlines, and the hype through private briefings from front-line scientists, Arctic experts, military leaders, and locals who have lived there for generations.
  • Develop  a deep understanding for how the changing Arctic is now on a trajectory that cannot soon be stopped. Learn about the forces of natural climate change, including the cyclical “ice-ages” and why the current situation is different.
  • Absorb the implications for what we must do to slow the warming, to be more resilient to the extreme weather events, and the urgent need to start adaptation now for higher base sea level in the coming decades.

This experience is particularly recommended for those that can influence public policy, those that can have ‘ripple effects’ in mass media, social media, professional circles, and the private sector. Some find this deep, week-long experience the perfect place to write, do photography, or inspire other artistic creations –– or to achieve philosophical perspective about our path.

It is difficult to overstate the impact and profoundness of the change now underway. The Arctic Ocean has been frozen for some three million years. It is now on an accelerating trajectory to be ice free, that might be slowed, but cannot be stopped by any of the present proposals. Due to some physical processes the Arctic is warming three or four times faster than  the global average. The melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet is the primary force that will reshape every landmass on the  planet as sea level rises to heights unknown for 122,000 years.
